About the Refugee Camp exhibit
Guided by volunteers, from Central Alberta Refugee Effort and Catholic Social Services participants will be given the ID of a fictitious person who is a refugee, while registering for entry to the camp at the Registration table. They will imagine that they are among the millions of people fleeing violence and persecution in, for example, Somalia, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, or Sudan.
The exhibit will be made up of “stations” (tables) to represent emergency refugee housing, food distribution, water distribution, health clinic, education, family reunification and resettlement.
The following questions will be addressed:
· Will I be safe?
· What will I eat?
· How do I find water?
· Can I get medical care?
· Where will I live?
Participants will learn more about the issues refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) face; with this interactive experience.
* On June 20th (World Refugee Day) CARE and CSS in collaboration with the City of Red Deer, Red Cross and other agencies offer an outdoor, more elaborate version which students are invited to attend.
